Meet Jane Wood Nutritionist and Mindfulness Practitioner
I graduated from Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Human Nutrition. Upon graduation I held several positions focused in clinical and community based nutrition. As well, I spent several years working within the food service industry. In 2001 I made the decision to join the Canadian Armed Forces as a Logistics Officer. Although my military career did not specialize in nutrition, I remained current in my field. Through various academic exercises and providing nutritional education to my co-workers, I switched my focus to sports nutrition. As I began to develop my own athletic competency, my knowledge in sports nutrition grew. I competed in numerous marathons and triathlon, in addition to playing competitive volleyball. I provided nutritional counseling to many of my team mates and others interested in endurance sports. I also assisted young local athletes such as the Petawawa Predators Swim Team and players of various levels of competitive hockey and soccer teams.
In my current practice I guide client through a process of connecting to the relationships they have with the foods they eat. We look at ways of balancing nutritional intakes, without the use of diets or weight loss. In this process the client learns to listen to their body and how to nourish it with out the negative impact of the diet industry. I am deeply passionate about celebrating all bodies teaching clients that food is for fuel and enjoyment.
During my military service I deployed to Afghanistan and was diagnosed with an Operation Stress Injury. By attending to my own wellness needs I became passionate in educating serving members, veterans and their families on the impact of mental illness. Nutrition plays a major role in mental health and I can personally testify on how feeding your body a balanced diet can dramatically aid in mental healing.
I came upon Mindfulness as a tool to manage my depression. The practice of living in the moment drastically improved my quality of life and I feel compelled to teach these skills to others. I am a certified teacher from The Ottawa Mindfulness Clinic and have expanded my mindfulness credentials to include Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction for Teens and Mindful Eating Facilitation.
I started Nourish the Moment in 2012, as a way to reach out to the members of my community to educate them that nutrition can be easy and fun. I am deeply connected to the negative impacts of Diet Culture and how we have all bought into the lies. Many people living in larger bodies feel alienated and guilty for living in their body, and this is unacceptable. I am a registered Health at Every Size (HAES) practitioner and am excited to provide an inclusive and safe space for residents in the Ottawa Valley.
